About

Antonia Layzell is a curator and exhibition producer based in Suffolk, working across independent and institutional contexts.

I work by being responsive to the room, the work, and the people in it. I don't impose a structure, I find the one that's already there. A show isn't a straight line. It's a space where different periods, materials, and perspectives meet and hold each other. Curation is a form of gathering. It's about bringing work into a room where it can meet the people who need it, and letting the relationship between the two do the work. The work is easier when you're not performing it. I try to be in the room without making it about me.

I work with something I call an oneness chart. I take an experience or a piece of work and move it through the senses, closer and closer to the centre, until I can hold it without it being in conflict with itself. By the time it gets to the middle, I know I can put it in a room. It's a simple process. The gradual removal of conflict.

I run the full operation: curating, installing, artist liaison, community engagement, marketing, front of house.

Currently working with Galerie Betty Charles in London and looking for a part-time curatorial or gallery role.

Build the world how you want it to be from the inside to the outside, and set things straight for future generations.
